The Laken Riley Act: Alabama Takes a Stand for Law, Order, and American Security

In April 2025, the Alabama House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act (HB7), a significant step in enhancing state and local law enforcement’s ability to collaborate with federal agencies on immigration enforcement.  Named in memory of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student tragically killed by an undocumented immigrant, the legislation aims to prevent similar incidents by strengthening the enforcement of existing immigration laws.

The Laken Riley Act creates an expectation that state and local law enforcement agencies to enter into formal agreements with federal entities such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to enforce federal immigration laws. This collaboration includes the authority to arrest and detain individuals based on their immigration status and to transfer them to federal custody.

Proponents of the bill, including Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter and Representative Ernie Yarbrough, emphasize that the legislation is a commonsense measure to enhance public safety. They correctly argue that empowering local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws will help protect communities from individuals who are in the country illegally and commit violent crimes.

As expected, the bill has faced criticism from progressive lawmakers and civil rights organizations who, if nothing else, can always be counted on to stand for the rights of anyone but the American Citizens whose interests they should be advocating for - expressing concerns that the legislation could lead to racial profiling and discourage cooperation with law enforcement among immigrant communities.
